In Togo, the Prefectural Hospital (CHP) located in Vogan, approximately forty kilometers northeast of Lomé, is set to introduce a new ophthalmology clinic. Construction commenced late last week after a foundation stone laying ceremony led by Wotobe Kokou, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Health. This initiative, fully financed with 705 million FCFA by the Swiss organization ToGo Opening Eyes, aims to enhance specialized healthcare services in the country, especially in eye health.
The upcoming facility is touted to be among the most advanced in Togo, featuring state-of-the-art equipment for diagnosing, treating, and performing surgeries for various ophthalmological conditions, with a focus on cataracts, a leading cause of blindness in the nation. Once operational, this clinic is anticipated to set a national standard for quality care and alleviate pressure on specialized centers in the capital. Wotobe Kokou remarked, ‘The future ophthalmology clinic will be the largest in the country, representing Togo’s commitment to health and the well-being of its citizens.’
The establishment of this unit coincides with ongoing reforms in the Togolese healthcare system, including the launch of the Universal Health Insurance (AMU) program in January 2024, aimed at providing broader and fairer access to healthcare for vulnerable groups.
