720 Million FCFA Allocated for Wawa 1’s Modernization with French Support.

In the commune of Wawa 1, situated in the Plateaux region of Togo, a new territorial development initiative known as the Financing of Local Authorities (FICOL) was officially inaugurated on Tuesday, April 22, 2025. This project, backed by Franco-Togolese cooperation, has secured financial backing of 720 million FCFA, primarily sourced from the French Development Agency (AFD) and the French department of Vienne.

The FICOL initiative is designed to enhance the living and working conditions for the residents of Wawa 1. It encompasses road maintenance, street addressing, and the establishment of a local radio station that will broadcast on FM and online. This communication network aims to facilitate better information flow within the municipality and to its diaspora, addressing the dual goals of fostering social cohesion and ensuring transparency in local public management.

Ultimately, local authorities aspire to transform this city into a model of urban planning that is cleaner, more informed, and socially cohesive. Some facilities have already been delivered and installed, indicating effective program implementation, as noted by municipal officials.

Sibyl Pécréau, head of the Vienne departmental delegation, who was present at the launch, emphasized that this program was a direct response to requests from the municipality and its residents. She also announced plans to expand the program into other sectors, particularly healthcare, with the intention of equipping the municipality’s healthcare centers.
