The British Council, in partnership with SMEDAN, and supported by the Investment Climate Reform Facility, has launched the MSME Impact Advisory Group. The new platform seeks to strengthen inclusive business reforms and expand financing for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises in Nigeria.
The launch took place at the Lagos Continental Hotel during the National Roundtable on MSME Financing. The event gathered policymakers, investors, and development partners to explore ways to improve business access to finance.
Participants agreed that the MSME Impact Advisory Group would help close gaps between policy and action. It aims to unite government, private institutions, and entrepreneurs under a single growth vision. Through collaboration, the group plans to remove barriers such as poor funding, limited incentives, and weak coordination.
In his remarks, Charles Odii, Director-General of SMEDAN, reaffirmed his agency’s commitment to small business growth. He said MSMEs form the foundation of Nigeria’s economy and deserve better access to opportunity. According to him, the initiative proves that collaboration remains the surest path to sustainable progress.
The British Council emphasized that this effort goes beyond financial inclusion. It promotes accountability and sustainability across Nigeria’s business community. The organization explained that integrating environmental, social, and governance principles will attract investors and strengthen competitiveness.
Furthermore, discussions at the roundtable produced key recommendations. Stakeholders urged banks to expand credit access and simplify lending terms. They also encouraged stronger partnerships between financial institutions and small enterprises. Many stressed that digital innovation is vital for efficiency, transparency, and global relevance.
Development partners praised the initiative and pledged ongoing support. They agreed that the MSME Impact Advisory Group aligns with global economic goals. They also noted its relevance to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those on growth and decent work.
As implementation begins, optimism continues to grow. Stakeholders promised regular reviews and transparent reporting to track progress. They also agreed that the initiative’s success depends on collective action and consistent leadership.
Ultimately, the launch of the MSME Impact Advisory Group signals a new era for Nigerian entrepreneurs. It reflects commitment, vision, and unity. With sustained cooperation, Nigeria’s MSMEs can now reach new frontiers of innovation and growth.
