PowerChina, one of the world’s leading state-owned engineering and infrastructure giants, is deepening its collaboration with Nigeria to expand renewable energy access and accelerate sustainable power development. The company, operating under China’s State Council, announced a new partnership with the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) and several Nigerian firms to drive clean energy adoption across the country.
During the 12th edition of the Nigeria Energy Exhibition and Conference held at the Landmark Event Centre in Lagos, PowerChina reaffirmed its strong commitment to supporting Nigeria’s energy transition. According to Sammi Zhou, the company’s Global Director for the Integrated Intelligent Energy Storage Solutions (I²-ESS) initiative, this partnership represents a significant step toward achieving universal energy access while fostering innovation and environmental responsibility.
Zhou explained that the I²-ESS initiative combines advanced technology, smart design, and scalable infrastructure to meet Nigeria’s growing power demand. He emphasized that by leveraging PowerChina’s global expertise and local partnerships, the company aims to build resilient energy systems that not only provide electricity but also strengthen economic growth in underserved regions.
Furthermore, the collaboration aligns with Nigeria’s long-term renewable energy agenda and supports the government’s push for energy diversification. By integrating storage and clean power solutions, the project seeks to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and cut carbon emissions. Through this effort, PowerChina hopes to enhance grid stability, improve rural electrification, and create new opportunities for businesses and communities across the country.
In addition, Zhou highlighted that PowerChina’s approach goes beyond infrastructure development. It includes knowledge transfer, local capacity building, and job creation, ensuring that Nigerian engineers and technicians gain the skills needed to manage modern energy systems. This, he noted, would guarantee long-term sustainability and position Nigeria as a key player in Africa’s clean energy transformation.
