Golfe 1 and Golfe 4 Officials Complete Decentralisation Training in Lomé

Local government officials from the Golfe 1 and Golfe 4 districts in Lomé have completed a targeted training programme on decentralisation. The course ended on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, marking another step toward strengthening local governance in Togo.

The training focused on the roles and responsibilities of local authorities within the decentralisation framework. It aimed to improve understanding of legal mandates, administrative duties, and decision-making processes at the grassroots level. Through this approach, officials gained clearer insight into their functions and obligations to their communities.

The programme formed part of a broader capacity-building project led by the National Agency for the Training of Local Authorities (ANFCT). The initiative seeks to equip elected officials and council staff with practical knowledge to improve service delivery. It also promotes accountability and effective local administration.

In addition, the French Embassy in Togo provided support for the project. This collaboration reflects ongoing international backing for Togo’s decentralisation reforms. It also highlights the shared commitment to building stronger local institutions.

During the sessions, participants engaged in discussions on governance, planning, and community engagement. Facilitators emphasized transparency, coordination, and citizen participation. These elements remain central to successful decentralisation.

By the end of the training, officials expressed stronger confidence in carrying out their duties. Many noted that the programme clarified grey areas around authority and responsibility. Others highlighted the value of shared experiences and peer learning.

Overall, the completion of the training represents progress in Togo’s decentralisation journey. With better-prepared local leaders, districts like Golfe 1 and Golfe 4 stand better positioned to deliver responsive and inclusive governance.
