The Honourable Minister of Works, Mr David Umahi, has inspected the ongoing construction of the Zaria–Funtua–Gusau–Sokoto’highway, a critical road corridor in Nigeria’s North-West region. The inspection formed part of the Federal Government’s continuous monitoring of strategic infrastructure projects across the country.
During the visit, the Minister assessed progress across different sections of the dual carriage highway. He noted that construction is advancing at varying stages along the route. Importantly, he expressed satisfaction with the quality of work being delivered so far. According to him, the project reflects the administration’s renewed focus on durable and economically impactful infrastructure.
Mr Umahi described the highway as a major catalyst for regional development. The road links key commercial centres. It also connects farming communities to urban markets. As a result, it plays a vital role in trade, mobility, and economic integration across the North-West.
Furthermore, the Minister stressed that improved road infrastructure directly supports national growth. When roads function efficiently, businesses reduce costs. Farmers move goods faster. Investors gain confidence. Consequently, regional economies expand and livelihoods improve.
He reiterated that President Bola Tinubu’s administration remains committed to completing all inherited projects. More importantly, the government intends to complete them to high standards. Quality, durability, and value for money, he said, remain non-negotiable priorities.
Mr Umahi also highlighted the importance of contractor accountability. He urged construction firms handling the project to maintain speed without compromising standards. According to him, timely delivery must go hand in hand with engineering excellence. That balance, he noted, ensures long-term value for Nigerians.
In addition, the Minister emphasised safety. Dual carriage highways, he explained, reduce travel risks and enhance efficiency. They also improve logistics for industries operating across state lines. Therefore, the Zaria–Funtua–Gusau–Sokoto road represents more than a transport link. It represents opportunity.
The inspection further reinforced the Federal Government’s broader infrastructure agenda. Across Nigeria, road projects remain central to economic recovery and regional balance. In the North-West especially, improved connectivity supports agriculture, trade, and cross-border commerce.
Mr Umahi assured communities along the corridor of the government’s continued engagement. He stressed that infrastructure must serve the people directly. Roads should reduce hardship. They should also unlock prosperity.
As work continues on the highway, expectations remain high. Once completed, the Zaria–Funtua–Gusau–Sokoto dual carriageway is expected to transform movement across the region. More importantly, it will strengthen economic activities and deepen integration within the North-West.
Through sustained oversight and clear policy direction, the Ministry of Works continues to position infrastructure as a foundation for national development.
