Valentine: Apprentice Allegedly Kills Master With Pestle In Onitsha, Injures Wife

A 21-year-old apprentice, Chiemerie Anieke, has allegedly killed his master at Onyia Uke Street, Fegge, in Onitsha South Local Government Area of Anambra State, following an argument over his late return home on Valentine’s night.

The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday morning after the deceased, identified as Mr. Ikechukwu Nwite, also known as “Turn by Turn,” questioned the apprentice about returning home late on Saturday night.

Sources said the deceased, who traded at the Drug Market at Bridge Head, Onitsha, was attacked during the altercation. He was said to have sustained severe head injuries after being struck with a pestle.

Eyewitness accounts indicated that neighbours later evacuated the victim to a mortuary after confirming his death.

It was further gathered that the suspect allegedly attacked the deceased’s wife, Mrs. Ogechukwu Nwite, who manages their business. She was reportedly rescued by neighbours and is currently receiving medical treatment.

Confirming the incident, the Anambra State Police Command said the suspect has been arrested and is in custody.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, in a statement, said the pestle allegedly used in the attack has been recovered.

“Preliminary information reveals that the suspect was allegedly provoked by the manner in which the late Ikechukwu admonished him over his bad behaviour, including pilfering money meant for the shop, staying out late at night, and taking drugs,” Ikenga said.

He added that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, for comprehensive investigation and possible prosecution.

Police assured that further updates would be provided as investigations progress.
