The Festival Panafricain du Cinéma et de la Télévision de Ouagadougou (FESPACO), which takes place from February 22 to March 1, 2025, will feature six film projects from Togo. The number, a record, shows that the local film industry is thriving and growing.
The chosen films demonstrate the range of Togolese talent and include a number of genres. These include of submissions to film school productions, series, animation, viewpoint, and critical reviews. To make matters more exciting, young Togolese filmmaker Dogossa Birregah has been selected to take part in the Yennenga Academy, a program that aims to develop up-and-coming filmmakers from all over the continent. This triumph, according to the Ministry of Culture, is a definite sign of the industry’s rising trajectory and the growing international recognition of Togolese cinema.
The increase in FESPACO selections coincides with Togo’s government’s efforts to support the creative and cultural industries in an effort to improve employment, economic growth, and Togo’s standing. Lomé unveiled a five-year plan to support the regional film industry last December. Training and global promotion of Togolese productions are the main goals of this approach.
