Togo Requires a Minimum Local Purchase of 10% for Imported Fish and Poultry.

Togo has implemented a new requirement for importers of fish, poultry meat, and their derivatives, mandating that they source at least 10% of the requested quantity from local products prior to receiving import authorization. This regulation was formalized through an order from the Ministry of Fisheries and Animal Resources on February 20, 2025.

The ministry states that this initiative is designed to enhance domestic production by motivating industry stakeholders to prioritize local products before turning to imports. This effort aligns with the government’s broader objective of strengthening food security and supporting local producers, while also decreasing reliance on foreign markets.

The initiative seeks to address the challenges faced by Togolese producers, who currently produce insufficient volumes to meet national demand yet often struggle to find buyers within the local market. By mandating that importers incorporate a portion of national products in their transactions, the government aims to stimulate local fish and poultry production and promote better organization within the relevant sectors.
