Togo has Assumed Leadership of the Federation of Professional Associations of Banks and Financial Institutions in UEMOA.

Togo has assumed the presidency of the Federal Council of the Federation of Professional Associations of Banks and Financial Institutions of UEMOA (FAPBEF-UEMOA). This role has been entrusted to Guy Martial Awona, Managing Director of Orabank-Togo, who officially took over on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, during a meeting held in Lomé.

Awona succeeds Boccar Sy from Senegal, whose term has concluded. Over the next two years, he will be responsible for advancing the reforms initiated in the banking and financial sector of the West African Economic and Monetary Union, amidst increasing economic challenges.

There are significant expectations for the new president, as the WAEMU banking sector is undergoing substantial transformations. His primary focus will be on enhancing the development and stability of the financial system, particularly by improving access to credit for small and medium-sized enterprises.

Additionally, the Togolese leadership is expected to prioritize the acceleration of digitalization, which is crucial for enhancing financial inclusion within the community. Key objectives of his presidency will also include modernizing banking services, ensuring compliance with international standards, and strengthening financial security mechanisms.

Furthermore, fostering cooperation between banking institutions and UEMOA member states will be a strategic priority for Awona, as he seeks sustainable solutions for efficient and resilient finance. In this regard, Georges Barcola, the Togolese Minister of Economy and Finance, emphasized the importance of ongoing dialogue with the public authorities of the member countries.
