This week, on March 3, 2025, the commune of Doufelgou 1 in Togo initiated a comprehensive census of taxpayers with non-tax revenues, aimed at enhancing the financial capabilities of local authorities.
This initiative, supported by the Decentralization and Good Governance Program (ProDeG IV) and implemented by GIZ, seeks to establish an updated and georeferenced database of taxpayers for the municipality.
The census, scheduled to take place from March 4 to 11, 2025, will focus on various groups, including traders, artisans, service providers, and owners of bars, hotels, and restaurants. By identifying new non-tax revenue sources and improving taxpayer oversight, the municipality aims to optimize local tax collection and enhance budget transparency.
Approximately twenty census agents have been recruited and trained for this task. According to Tchemi Tchambi Tchapkro, the mayor of the commune, this operation is expected to facilitate more effective management of local finances and ensure better funding for public services.
