Distributors were Found Non-Compliant After Unannounced Gas Station Inspections.

In Togo, the High Authority for Quality and the Environment (HAUQE), through its technical arm, the Togolese Metrology Agency (ATOMET), conducted a series of surprise inspections at various gas stations in Greater Lomé on Tuesday, March 11, 2025. This operation aimed to verify the accuracy of fuel distribution meters in response to allegations of potential measurement and gauge fraud.

A total of 11 stations were inspected at random, following a selection process by the Togolese Consumer Association (ATC). The primary goal was to evaluate the adherence of fuel distributors to existing regulations.

These inspections are integral to our commitment to consumer protection and ensuring fairness in commercial practices. It is crucial that every liter purchased matches the quantity delivered, and we will persist with these inspections to maintain transparency in the industry,” stated Bébéi Bataba, Director General of ATOMET.

As a result of the inspections, two dispensers were found to be non-compliant. ATOMET promptly implemented corrective actions by sealing the equipment to prevent any further non-compliant usage.

“The operators of the stations identified for non-compliance will face penalties in accordance with current regulations. To reactivate the sealed equipment, they must engage their technicians to make the necessary adjustments in the presence of our agents. A follow-up inspection will then be conducted by ATOMET to ensure that the distributors meet compliance standards before resuming operations,” explained Laré Botre, president of HAUQE.
