Southern African Coalition to Gradually Withdraw Troops from Congo.

On Thursday, the Southern African Development Community (SADC) announced that a summit of regional leaders has concluded the mandate for its troop deployment in the Democratic Republic of Congo, opting for a “phased withdrawal.”

The SADC stated in a communiqué following the summit, “The summit has ended the mandate of SAMIDRC and has instructed the initiation of a phased withdrawal of SAMIDRC troops from the DRC.”

A document reviewed by Reuters in February indicated that the mission’s status in Congo required discussions with the involved parties in the conflict.

The 16-member SADC initiated its mission in Congo in December 2023 to assist the Congolese army in combating rebel groups. Although the mandate was extended late last year, the mission has faced significant losses in 2025.
