Kano State’s Energy Revolution: REA Delivers Sustainable Clean Energy to Kura LGA

Under the guidance of Abba Abubakar Aliyu, the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) has ramped up its initiatives to improve energy access in Nigeria’s rural areas. A key program in this effort is the Results-Based Financing for Productive Appliances & Equipment (RBF for PUE), which is supported by the African Development Bank as part of the Nigeria Electrification Project (NEP).

This initiative aims to provide electricity to 24,500 micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and enhance energy services for around 1,050,000 people by promoting access to energy-efficient electric equipment.

In the Kura Local Government Area of Kano State, the REA’s projects have showcased the transformative potential of clean energy when paired with productive use equipment. By merging sustainable energy solutions with energy-efficient appliances, local businesses have seen boosts in productivity and economic development, highlighting the REA’s dedication to building resilient communities through innovative energy strategies.

Abba Aliyu’s forward-thinking vision goes beyond immediate electrification efforts. His leadership has been crucial in obtaining approval for the $750 million Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale-up (DARES) facility from the World Bank, which builds on the achievements of the NEP. This initiative seeks to further enhance renewable energy access throughout Nigeria, reinforcing the country’s commitment to sustainable development and inclusive growth.

Through these focused efforts, Abba Abubakar Aliyu and the REA are making notable progress in closing Nigeria’s energy access gap, encouraging the use of renewable energy technologies, and fostering socio-economic development in underserved areas.
