Togo concluded 2024 with an electricity access rate of 70%, as reported by the Ministry of Mines and Energy Resources. This marks a two-point increase from the 68% recorded in 2023 and a significant rise of twenty points since 2020, when the access rate was at 50%. This progress aligns with the government’s commitment to achieving universal electricity coverage by 2030.
The goal set for the end of 2024, which aimed for a 70% electrification rate, has been successfully met. This achievement is attributed to the ongoing projects that have been implemented over the years to address the country’s energy demands.
Key initiatives include off-grid solar energy access programs, such as the CIZO initiative, a rural electrification project targeting 317 localities through solar mini-grids, and the Support Project for the Social Component of the CIZO program (PRAVOST).
The 2024 agenda also encompasses funding for projects like the Tinga Fund and the second phase of mini-grids. Concurrently, efforts to expand the Blitta solar power plant are ongoing to enhance national production capacity and improve energy supply.
Looking towards 2025, Togolese authorities plan to intensify their efforts by accelerating existing projects and seeking new energy production avenues. Strategic plans include an agreement with the American firm Nano Nuclear Energy to develop micro-nuclear reactors for electricity generation. To manage this initiative and ensure compliance with current regulations, the establishment of a Togolese Atomic Energy Commission (TAEC) is proposed. This body will oversee the peaceful application of nuclear technologies and their integration into the national energy framework.
Simultaneously, backing from financial partners continues to be a crucial factor in facilitating the transformation of the energy sector. In December 2024, the World Bank sanctioned $200 million in funding for Togo. This financial support is intended to aid ongoing reforms, including the introduction of a new tariff structure aimed at enhancing the sector’s sustainability and increasing electricity access for the entire population.
