Togo Security Improves

In Togo, while there has been a general rise in security incidents during 2023-2024, a noteworthy trend is emerging: a reduction in the number of regions identified as high-risk. This finding is highlighted in the latest report from WANEP-Togo (West African Network for Peacebuilding), which was presented in Lomé on January 29, 2025.

The report attributes this positive development to collaborative efforts among the Togolese government, civil society organizations, and international partners. These stakeholders have significantly enhanced awareness campaigns, stabilization initiatives, and development projects in vulnerable regions, particularly in the Savannah area.

Although the Kpendjal prefecture continues to be the primary area necessitating heightened vigilance, the decrease in high-risk zones may indicate progress in preventive strategies.

Nevertheless, the overall situation remains challenging for the nation, characterized by a rise in security incidents during the reviewed period.

Security incidents

For instance, the country experienced 810 security incidents from January 2023 to December 2024, leading to over 500 fatalities. “This data underscores the impact and resurgence of organized crime and violent extremism,” stated Seyram Adiakpo, WANEP-Togo’s national coordinator, during the biannual report presentation in Lomé last January.

Support for security forces

In light of these circumstances, WANEP-Togo urges the enhancement of prevention strategies, economic resilience, and mechanisms for protecting human rights. The organization specifically calls for increased support for security forces and local initiatives, particularly in the affected border regions.
