The African Development Bank (AfDB) will invest approximately 17.4 billion FCFA (€26.5 million) in the construction of a 62 MWp solar photovoltaic power plant in Sokodé, central Togo.
The project, approved on Thursday, May 8, 2025, is part of Togo’s national strategy to achieve 200 MWp of renewable energy capacity by 2030.
The AfDB’s financing includes a €18.5 million loan and a €8 million concessional loan from the Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa (SEFA), which is also managed by the Bank. EDF Group will lead the design, construction, and operation of the facility, with co-financing from Proparco, the private sector subsidiary of AFD.
The total project cost is €61 million and includes the construction of an 11-km transmission line. The plant is projected to produce 87 GWh of electricity annually, reducing CO₂ emissions by 13,600 tons per year and improving access to clean, reliable, and affordable energy.
“The Sokodé solar project is a historic achievement,” said Kevin Kariuki, AfDB Vice President for Energy, emphasizing its importance in strengthening Togo’s energy security.
This investment follows the recent launch of another photovoltaic solar power plant construction project in Dapaong, Togo, which is expected to be operational within 13 months.
