Togo Trains Customs Brokers on AfCFTA Implementation

In Lomé, Togo, approximately forty licensed customs brokers participated in a training session on May 6 and 7 focused on the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Agreement and its operational mechanisms. Organized by the Togolese Ministry of Trade, this initiative is part of a broader effort by the government to familiarize key economic players with the requirements of this significant trade integration project.

Participants from various professional organizations, including the Professional Union of Authorized Customs Brokers (UPRAD), the Association of Authorized Customs Brokers (ACAD), and the CONVERGENCE group, received training on AfCFTA rules of origin, required trade documentation, and Togo’s adopted tariff concessions. They also received detailed information on the use of additional codes designed to meet the various categories outlined in the continental agreements.

The training aimed to equip these crucial foreign trade intermediaries with the technical knowledge necessary to effectively implement the AfCFTA’s provisions. Beyond enhancing understanding of legal and regulatory frameworks, the training also sought to raise awareness of the opportunities presented by the gradual liberalization of intra-African trade.

The AfCFTA agreement, spearheaded by the African Union and in effect since 2021, aims to establish a single market for goods and services across the continent. Togo is committed to this initiative and seeks to enhance the competitiveness of its businesses and expand their access to regional markets. As part of this commitment, the Togolese government is increasing engagement with economic operators through consultations and capacity-building programs.
