Togo Deploys Mobile Weighing Brigades to Combat Road Overloading

Togo’s Autonomous Road Maintenance Financing Company (SAFER) has deployed mobile weighing brigades on key roads with high traffic to combat overloading, a practice that accelerates the deterioration of the national road network. The system has been operational since the end of last week.

The pilot phase is focused on National Route 1. These mobile brigades, equipped with the latest generation of mobile axle scales, operate continuously, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with the same technical rigor as fixed weighing stations like the one in Djéréhouyé in the Plateaux region.

The positioning of these brigades aims to counter avoidance strategies used by some heavy goods vehicle drivers who, after complying with checkpoints at fixed locations, engage in clandestine reloading along their routes. According to SAFER, this circumvention of regulations causes damage to road infrastructure.

SAFER emphasizes that mobile brigades offer precision equivalent to fixed installations, while also providing flexibility in territorial coverage, making the system more responsive and adaptable.

To improve road network maintenance, SAFER plans a gradual deployment of these mobile units in other sensitive areas, particularly transit corridors towards Burkina Faso, Benin, and Ghana.
