Togolese authorities and European partners are strengthening their cooperation on the safety of dangerous goods transport in Lomé. A two-day symposium, which began on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, is being held as part of the SAFETIC project, funded by the European Union, to address the prevention, detection, and management of nuclear, radiological, biological, and chemical (NRBC) risks.
The initiative, led by the Ministry of the Environment, marks the culmination of a strategic program that merges two previous projects implemented regionally since 2013. The ultimate goal is to enhance the reliability of industrial facilities and secure supply chains, supporting sustainable economic development.
Togolese authorities recognize that industrial growth must not overshadow the risks associated with sensitive substances. “Managing industrial risks is a strategic challenge. Togo is firmly committed to strengthening its prevention, detection, and response capabilities,” stated Colonel Aoufoh Koffi Dimizou, Secretary General of the Ministry of the Environment and Forest Resources.
The European Union praised Togo’s commitment. “It is about supporting partner countries in reducing CBRN threats, while supporting safer and more sustainable economic development,” said Stéphane Devaux, team leader at the EU delegation in Lomé.
An industrial crisis simulation exercise will conclude this technical meeting.
