Togo Revitalizes Electoral Body to Ensure Fair Elections

The process of renewing Togo’s Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) officially began this Monday, June 2, 2025, with the National Assembly opening the application period, which will run until June 13.

The renewal involves five members: three from the extra-parliamentary opposition and two representing civil society. Candidates nominated by political parties not represented in the Assembly and by civil society organizations are invited to submit their applications to the office of the President of the National Assembly, according to an official press release published by the parliamentary institution.

This reorganization precedes the next municipal elections, scheduled for July 17, 2025. It also addresses a recommendation made by political actors within the Permanent Consultation Framework (CPC), calling for a revitalization of the CENI to guarantee better representativeness and transparency in the electoral process.

The current office of the election-organizing body, chaired by Yago Dabré, has been out of office for several months. For the opposition parties, the integration of new members is a prerequisite for organizing credible and peaceful elections.
