Togo Finalizing Accession to Pan-African Great Green Wall Project

Togo is on the verge of joining the pan-African Great Green Wall initiative. This commitment was reiterated in Lomé on May 28, 2025, during the regional project validation process held in the Togolese capital.

Juan Carlos Vasquez, representing the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), confirmed the information after a meeting with the Minister of the Environment, Foli Bazi Katari.

“The accession procedure is almost complete,” said the UN diplomat, adding that a ministerial meeting and a summit of heads of state are expected by the end of 2025 for official confirmation.

Supported by 20 countries, the Great Green Wall aims to restore 100 million hectares of degraded land across Africa, stretching from Senegal to Djibouti. Togo, facing significant challenges from desertification and soil erosion, views this membership as a key tool for climate adaptation and sustainable rural development.

UNEP has also pledged to support Togo, both financially and technically, in developing a national program of restoration activities.
