President Bola Tinubu has formally declared the establishment of diplomatic relations between Nigeria and Saint Lucia, hailing the move as a “symbolic bridge” that will pave the way for stronger and more collaborative ties between the two nations.
President Tinubu made the announcement during a special joint session of the Senate and House of Assembly of Saint Lucia, held at the prestigious William Jefferson Clinton Ballroom, Sandals Grande, Gros Islet, Saint Lucia. The event was attended by prominent leaders and dignitaries from both countries, underscoring the significance of this historic moment.
In his address, President Tinubu emphasized the deep-rooted historical and cultural connections that bind Nigeria and the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS). He called for enhanced people-to-people engagement to further strengthen these bonds and foster a greater understanding between the two regions.
To facilitate structured cooperation between Nigeria and the OECS, President Tinubu proposed the creation of a Joint Commission or Political Consultation Agreement. This mechanism would provide a framework for regular dialogue and collaboration on a wide range of issues, including trade, investment, education, and culture.
In a gesture of goodwill and commitment to fostering cultural exchange, President Tinubu announced that he would offer full scholarships to deserving students from the OECS. These scholarships will enable students to pursue higher education in Nigeria, thereby promoting cultural understanding and strengthening the bonds between Nigeria and the Eastern Caribbean states.
The Nigerian leader’s address was delivered in the presence of esteemed leaders from the OECS, further highlighting the importance of this diplomatic initiative. President Tinubu’s visit to Saint Lucia and the establishment of diplomatic relations mark a significant step forward in strengthening Nigeria’s ties with the Caribbean region and promoting South-South cooperation. The initiatives announced by President Tinubu are expected to create new opportunities for collaboration and exchange between Nigeria and the OECS, fostering mutual growth and development.
