In a decisive move to bolster security in the Niger Delta, the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) SOROH, under the Central Naval Command (CNC) in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, has successfully apprehended a suspected militant and sea pirate. The individual was caught red-handed with an illegal General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG) and a cache of ammunition, prompting a swift handover to the Department of State Services (DSS) for further investigation and prosecution.
Commodore Omobamidele Akinbami, the Commander of the Navy outfit, revealed that the operation, a testament to the Navy’s intelligence gathering and operational capabilities, took place on June 27, 2025. NNS SOROH executed a targeted raid on a suspected militant camp nestled within the Peremabiri Community, located in the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
Commodore Akinbami emphasized that the raid was not a random act but the culmination of credible intelligence and persistent surveillance activities focused on the identified location and its occupants. These individuals were strongly suspected of engaging in illicit activities that posed a significant threat to national security and the overall stability of the volatile Niger Delta region.
“The operation, executed with remarkable precision and unwavering professionalism, resulted in the successful arrest of one militant, identified as Mr. Daniel Damigo,” Commodore Akinbami stated with conviction. “The raid also yielded the recovery of one HK GPMG – a potent weapon often used in acts of piracy and militancy – along with a substantial quantity of ammunition, undoubtedly intended for nefarious purposes.”
This successful operation sends a clear and unequivocal message to criminal elements operating in the Niger Delta: the Nigerian Navy is vigilant, determined, and fully committed to safeguarding the nation’s maritime domain. The apprehension of the suspect and the seizure of the illegal weaponry not only disrupt ongoing criminal activities but also serve as a powerful deterrent to others contemplating similar unlawful acts. The seamless collaboration between the Nigerian Navy and the DSS further strengthens the security architecture in the region, ensuring a safer and more secure environment for law-abiding citizens and legitimate economic activities to thrive. The Navy’s swift action reaffirms its dedication to maintaining peace and stability, paving the way for sustainable development and prosperity in the Niger Delta.
