President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has renamed the University of Maiduguri to Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri, in honour of the late former President. He made the announcement on Thursday during an expanded Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The special FEC session was convened to pay tribute to Buhari, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 82. Tinubu, while addressing cabinet members, former ministers, and Buhari’s family, called for the adoption of the renaming proposal. His words drew a standing ovation and loud applause from attendees.
“Before we take the prayers — in honour of his memory, with this special session of the Federal Executive Council (expanded) — can we adopt the naming of the University of Maiduguri with a new name — Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri,” Tinubu said as he closed the meeting.
The President described the renaming as a national gesture of gratitude for Buhari’s years of sacrifice and commitment to Nigeria. He said Buhari exemplified public service and earned a place in the nation’s history through dedication and leadership.
Former ministers who served under Buhari and other top officials joined Tinubu in celebrating the late leader’s contributions. Many praised his modest lifestyle, disciplined leadership, and relentless efforts to protect Nigeria’s unity.
Tinubu said the university, located in Borno State, represents a symbol of resilience and learning in the northeast. He noted that its survival through years of insecurity reflected the same strength Buhari showed throughout his life.
He added that the renamed institution would now carry a legacy that teaches courage, integrity, and patriotism to future generations. According to him, Buhari’s name on the institution will inspire students to serve the country with honour and loyalty.
Buhari, who ruled first as a military head of state from 1983 to 1985 and later as a civilian president from 2015 to 2023, left a legacy that shaped Nigeria’s democratic and anti-corruption path. Tinubu said honouring him through a federal university will preserve that legacy in a lasting and meaningful way.
The announcement also marked a rare moment of unity, as past and present government officials came together in remembrance. Among them was Buhari’s son, Yusuf, who sat quietly as tributes poured in for his late father.
Tinubu called on Nigerians to reflect on the example Buhari set throughout his life. He said the values of service, sacrifice, and accountability must remain part of the nation’s identity.
He concluded by encouraging the university’s leadership to carry forward Buhari’s vision by producing leaders who uphold national values. He also assured that the federal government will continue to support education and expand access across all zones.
The decision to rename the University of Maiduguri capped a day of emotion, reflection, and national pride. For many, Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri, now stands as a powerful reminder of a leader whose impact went far beyond politics.
