I had the honour of representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, at the public presentation of According to the President, a new book authored by Garba Shehu, the former presidential spokesman to President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR. The event took place today in Abuja and brought together individuals from across Nigeria’s political and intellectual spectrum.
This publication is more than just a memoir. It provides a rare insider’s account of the Buhari administration and reveals the thoughts and decisions behind many critical national events. Through Garba Shehu’s perspective, readers gain access to conversations, debates, and decisions that defined a complex era in our national life.
The years covered in the book were filled with challenges, reforms, and defining choices. Many of the issues discussed still influence the direction of our country today. From security to economic decisions, the reflections contained in this work give readers a closer look at the dynamics of leadership in turbulent times.
What makes this book stand out is its clarity and honesty. It does not attempt to erase mistakes or exaggerate achievements. Instead, it offers a balanced and thoughtful record. In a country where many decisions are easily misunderstood or misrepresented, such honest documentation is vital. It helps the public understand what went into the choices made at the highest level.
I found the presentation and the conversations around the book deeply thought-provoking. The author encourages all Nigerians to examine leadership with a sense of fairness and responsibility. He reminds us that no administration is perfect. Each one faces circumstances that shape its decisions and outcomes. Understanding this can improve how we engage with current and future governments.
This book challenges us to reflect on how power is used and communicated in our democracy. It highlights the importance of transparency and public accountability. It also encourages young Nigerians, especially those interested in public service, to appreciate the weight and complexity of leadership. When people understand leadership better, they become more responsible citizens.
Books like this are crucial to building national memory. They serve as tools for learning and reflection. They also protect history from being distorted or forgotten. According to the President contributes to our collective understanding and gives future leaders something to study and learn from.
I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in Nigeria’s journey over the last decade. It offers lessons, challenges assumptions, and invites thoughtful engagement. As a country, we grow when we take time to look back with clarity and humility.
The author has made a valuable contribution to Nigeria’s democratic space. His voice joins those who believe in telling our story with facts and context. This is how a nation matures. This is how history serves progress.
Let us continue to document, reflect, and build the Nigeria we all deserve.
