Kano state Commissioner of Health Dr. Abubakar Labaran has said that the state government has earmarked N500 million to fight the threat of malnutrition affecting 51.9% children who are stunted due to the problem in the state.
Labaran disclosed this during a meeting to review the malnutrition intervention program by the FHI 360 Alive & Thrive Nigeria Project, which closed out its activities in the state on Wednesday.
He said “Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has provided N500 million while UNICEF provided another N500 million with which we bought the N1 billion RUTF we are distributing. And it’s going to last for several months before we exhaust it,”
“Yusuf said with the current intervention by the state government, UNICEF and development partners, malnutrition will be reduced to the barest minimum as well as reduce the prevalence of anemia among pregnant women in the state.”
The commissioner applauded the FHI 360 alive $ thrive Nigeria Project for the wonderful work they have been executed globally to save lives, prevent illness, improve health and well-being of mothers, children and adolescents.
Speaking on the Project Closeout, the state team leader, Dr. Ashiru Muhammad, enumerated numerous achievements recorded by the fhi360 alive & thrive in the last four years.
He recalled how the program reduced the rate of anemia among women in reproductive ages, which was 58 percent as at 2018, as well as bring down the rate of stunting among young children, which reduced to 40 percent in the last three years.
“Not only that, we have also built the capacity of healthcare workers, where more that 8000 of them benefitted from healthcare skills while more than one million women were able to be prevented from being anemic.
“In the meantime, 23 percent of pregnant women have access to MMS, event though we are rated higher. We have also distributed 50,000 IYCF materials in Kano state” he said.
