Nigeria is moving with remarkable focus toward becoming a global leader in Artificial Intelligence, as the Director General of the National Information Technology Development Agency, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, outlined during his address at the GITEX Global 2025 event in Dubai. He explained that Artificial Intelligence is not only shaping the country’s technological landscape but also transforming productivity and opening vast economic opportunities for millions of Nigerians.
Speaking on the topic “AI Development in Nigeria: Building an Inclusive and Responsible Future,” Abdullahi emphasized that Nigeria’s progress in Artificial Intelligence demonstrates its readiness to embrace innovation responsibly. He said the government is deliberately creating policies that encourage the adoption of AI to drive efficiency, enhance decision-making, and improve the delivery of essential services. As a result, technology is steadily becoming a tool for empowerment, inclusion, and sustainable growth.
Furthermore, he noted that Artificial Intelligence is now influencing several critical sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, education, and finance. Through AI-driven innovation, farmers are gaining access to predictive tools that improve yields, while healthcare systems are adopting smarter diagnostic models that save lives. In education, digital learning solutions are expanding opportunities for young Nigerians, and in finance, intelligent platforms are increasing access to credit for small businesses. Each of these developments, he said, demonstrates how AI can bridge gaps and create real value for people and communities.
To deepen this progress, Abdullahi highlighted that NITDA is working closely with universities, startups, and global partners to strengthen local capacity in Artificial Intelligence. He added that this inclusive approach aligns perfectly with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes digital transformation as a foundation for economic renewal.
Moreover, he pointed out that Nigeria’s growing investment in AI infrastructure reflects a strong desire to remain competitive in the global digital economy. NITDA is also developing a National Artificial Intelligence Policy to establish clear ethical standards, encourage responsible innovation, and protect citizens’ data. This framework, according to Abdullahi, will help guide developers, investors, and regulators in ensuring that AI is used fairly, transparently, and inclusively.
He also stressed that the country’s success in Artificial Intelligence depends on consistent collaboration among government agencies, private organizations, and research institutions. Therefore, NITDA continues to promote dialogue, partnerships, and shared learning among stakeholders.
