A confidential security memo from the Department of State Services (DSS) has raised concerns over a potential coordinated attack by members of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) on parts of Ondo and Kogi States.
According to the leaked document, the intelligence report—addressed to the Brigade Commander, 32 Artillery Brigade, Owena Cantonment, Akure—indicated that ISWAP operatives were plotting assaults on identified communities, including Eriti-Akoko, Oyin-Akoko in Akoko North-West Local Government Area, and Owo town in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The DSS memo, dated October 20, 2025, signed by Hi Kana on behalf of the State Director of Security, revealed that the terrorist group had begun surveillance on soft targets within the affected areas, prompting a directive to increase security alertness and forestall possible attacks.
The report urged heightened vigilance among security operatives and coordinated intelligence sharing to prevent any breach of peace.
However, reacting to the leaked memo, the Ondo State Government confirmed awareness of the development, stressing that the document formed part of routine inter-agency intelligence exchanges aimed at preventing threats and safeguarding lives.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr. Idowu Ajanaku, the government described the leaked memo as a regular security advisory and not an indication of imminent crisis.
“The leaked memo is part of routine intelligence reports shared among security agencies. Such reports help to identify and prevent potential threats before they occur. Residents are therefore urged to remain calm and vigilant,” the statement said.
Ajanaku assured that the Aiyedatiwa administration is working closely with the military, police, DSS, Amotekun Corps, and other security agencies to strengthen surveillance, particularly in border communities.
He said the government is taking proactive measures to ensure the safety of citizens and maintain Ondo’s reputation as one of the most peaceful states in the country.
“Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa remains fully committed to protecting the lives and property of residents. All relevant security agencies are on red alert, and the situation is under close watch,” the statement added.
The government also appealed to residents to refrain from panic or taking laws into their hands, urging them instead to report any suspicious movement or persons to the nearest security formation.
Ajanaku reiterated that the cooperation of citizens is crucial in defeating criminal elements and sustaining peace across the state.
