Air Peace Expands Global Reach With Abuja–London Heathrow Flights

Nigeria’s largest carrier, Air Peace, has officially launched its Abuja–London Heathrow service, expanding its international network and reinforcing Nigeria’s presence in global aviation.

The inaugural flight, which took off from Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on Sunday, marks Air Peace’s second direct route to the United Kingdom after the Lagos–London Gatwick service commenced in March 2024.

A Celebration of Nigerian Excellence

The departure ceremony at the Abuja airport was vibrant and celebratory, as the check-in counters were adorned with branded décor and enthusiastic passengers received souvenirs and refreshments. Present at the event were key figures in government and the aviation industry, including the airline’s Chairman, Dr. Allen Onyema, Vice Chairman, Mrs. Alice Onyema, members of the Board of Directors Barr. Emeka Ngige (SAN), Mrs. Ekaette Monsuru, Engr. Benedict Adeyileka, and Chairman, United Nigeria Airlines, Dr. Obiora Okonkwo.

Also in attendance were top government officials, including the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo (SAN), and the Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia, who represented the Vice President. The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Okezie Kalu, attended on behalf of the 10th National Assembly.

Government Applauds Indigenous Success

Minister Keyamo underscored the strategic importance of the new route, describing it as a product of intensive diplomatic efforts that secured Heathrow slots under the bilateral air services agreement (BASA). He reaffirmed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration remains committed to supporting local operators to thrive internationally.

“Mr. President’s mandate is to support local operators to thrive and survive,” Keyamo said. “In the last 40 years, more than 100 airlines have come and gone. Our priority now is to empower Nigerian carriers to fully utilise their rights under existing BASA agreements.”

He noted that the Abuja–Heathrow route connects Nigeria’s capital to what he called “the connecting capital of Europe,” strengthening business and travel ties between both nations.

Representing the Vice President, Hadejia congratulated Air Peace on behalf of the Federal Government, praising the airline for deepening competition, improving service quality, and providing more affordable access for Nigerian travellers. He lauded the patriotism and resilience that made the milestone possible, describing the initiative as a “testament to the success of the administration’s enabling aviation policies.”

Deputy Speaker Kalu echoed similar sentiments, saying the development exemplifies how “when government clears the runway, the private sector takes flight.” He commended Onyema as a role model for entrepreneurship, integrity, and vision, adding that the new route will inspire young Nigerians to dream bigger.

Onyema: Nigerian Aviation Can Compete Globally

Air Peace Chairman, Dr. Allen Onyema, expressed gratitude to President Tinubu, Minister Keyamo, and other stakeholders for their consistent support of indigenous airlines. He said the Heathrow operation underscores the capacity of Nigerian airlines to compete globally when given fair opportunity and policy backing.

“This success is a direct result of government listening to the yearnings and aspirations of its people,” Onyema said. “What we are celebrating is patriotism and love for one’s country. Nigerian airlines can soar globally when properly supported.”

He emphasised that Air Peace’s expansion into London’s premier airport — with connections to the Americas, Europe, and the Caribbean — places the carrier at the heart of global travel networks.

Symbol of Growth and Opportunity

The Abuja–Heathrow service, effective October 26, 2025, marks a major stride for Nigeria’s aviation industry, enhancing global connectivity, creating economic opportunities, and reinforcing the role of domestic carriers in international markets.

As passengers boarded the maiden flight, the atmosphere was one of pride and optimism. With seamless ticketing options from several Nigerian cities via Abuja to Heathrow, Air Peace promises greater accessibility, competitive fares, and improved service quality.

For both Air Peace and Nigeria, the landmark launch goes beyond aviation — it’s a declaration that Nigeria’s eagle is taking flight on the global stage.
