A magnitude 7 earthquake hit Tonga on Sunday, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ). The earthquake occurred at a depth of 16 kilometers (10 miles), as reported by GFZ.

Previously, GFZ had estimated the earthquake’s magnitude at 6.6.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning System indicated that hazardous tsunami waves could potentially affect areas within 300 kilometers of the epicenter along Tonga’s coastlines. Tonga is a Polynesian kingdom comprising over 170 islands in the South Pacific.
