ANASAP is Undergoing Restructuring in Togo.

To better align with its new interventions on the ground, Togo’s National Agency for Sanitation and Public Health (ANASAP), a key player in managing urban sanitation, should soon undergo a significant reorganization.

In fact, a decree intended to amend its regulatory framework was reviewed in first reading by the Togolese government during the Council of Ministers meeting on Thursday, February 13, 2025.

The Togolese executive claims that the Agency, led by General Gnakoudè Berena, needs to restructure its operations because its operational missions have changed more than a decade after it was established. Originally a coordination, control, and support-advice organization, the agency is now a field player, especially in Lomé, where there are still major sanitation issues.

In order to maximize the efficacy of public health initiatives, the text under discussion specifically seeks to clarify the allocation of duties among ANASAP, local authorities, and the Autonomous District of Greater Lomé (DAGL), which unites thirteen municipalities.

Remember that ANASAP is currently working on a number of projects, including maintaining urban roads, cleaning gutters, preventing unlawful dumping, and establishing green spaces. With the opening of a regional branch in Kara in 2023, it has also broadened its sphere of influence within the nation in recent years.
