Bombings Destroy Hospital and Pharmacy in South Sudan

At least seven people have been killed and 20 injured in bombings that destroyed the last remaining hospital and pharmacy in Fangak county, South Sudan, according to Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF).

MSF reported that a bomb was dropped on the pharmacy, causing it to burn down and damaging the Old Fangak Hospital. Subsequently, another drone bomb struck Old Fangak, a town in the Greater Upper Nile region, resulting in at least seven fatalities.

The Old Fangak Hospital was the only healthcare facility serving a population of over 110,000 people in Fangak county, where access to healthcare was already severely limited.

The identity of the attackers and their motives remain unclear.

Government and army spokespeople were not immediately available for comment.

South Sudan has been officially at peace since a 2018 agreement ended a five-year civil war between forces supporting President Salva Kiir and those loyal to First Vice President Riek Machar.

However, the recent arrest of Machar in March on charges of inciting rebellion has raised international concerns about a potential resurgence of conflict.
