On April 22, 2025, China finalized the delivery of 2,400 tons of rice to Togo as part of its emergency food assistance initiative. This operation, which commenced in January, concluded with an official ceremony in Lomé, where Salifou Afo, the Secretary General of the Togolese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Chao Weidong, the Chinese Ambassador to Togo, signed the acceptance documents for the donation.
The shipment, valued at approximately 20 million yuan or around 1.74 billion CFA francs, was delivered in four phases, with the last batch of 659 tonnes completing the collaborative effort between Chinese and Togolese authorities. The rice has been handed over to the Togolese National Agency for Food Security (ANSAT), which will oversee its distribution across the nation.
This donation not only addresses immediate humanitarian needs but also reflects a broader strategy of cooperation between China and African nations, rooted in development assistance and established diplomatic and economic ties. As Togo, home to 8.5 million residents, confronts security and socio-economic issues in the Savannah region—an area grappling with terrorism threats—a substantial portion of the rice will be allocated to this region under the Savannah Region Emergency Program (PURS).
