CHU Lomé Campus Project

The CHU Lomé Campus Project officially began on September 30, 2025, marking a decisive step for healthcare in Togo. The University Hospital Center launched the preparation of its 2026–2030 Hospital Establishment Project, an ambitious plan designed to redefine its role and modernize its infrastructure. The announcement filled the halls with anticipation as staff, patients, and partners recognized the importance of this turning point.

The CHU Lomé Campus, created in 1988 with a capacity of 200 beds, has become the country’s second largest university hospital. Over time, its services expanded, and today more than 540 staff members work daily to serve patients. However, the demographic and epidemiological transition has created rising demand that strains its capacities. Crowded wards and limited resources reveal the urgent need for a new vision.

During the announcement, Director General Dr. Essotom Assina Kalao acknowledged the pressing challenges. He stressed that the quality of care must guide every decision and remain the hospital’s strategic axis. His words reflected both determination and realism. He admitted that capacities are already exceeded and insisted that careful planning for future equipment maintenance is essential to prevent rapid obsolescence.

The CHU Lomé Campus Project is not just about infrastructure but also about redefining healthcare standards. By setting new priorities, the hospital aims to adapt to modern challenges while maintaining compassion and excellence. Patients deserve safe spaces, reliable services, and technologies that improve treatment outcomes. Staff need resources that allow them to deliver care efficiently and with dignity.

The initiative also speaks to the broader health needs of Togo. As populations grow and health conditions evolve, hospitals must innovate. The CHU Campus has the responsibility to remain not only a place of healing but also a hub for training, research, and innovation. This project positions it as a cornerstone of the national health system for decades to come.

Staff members expressed cautious optimism after the launch. Many hope that the project will bring updated facilities, new technologies, and better working conditions. Their dedication remains strong, yet they recognize the need for tools that match the challenges of modern medicine. Patients and families also voiced expectations for quicker access, improved comfort, and reliable services. Their hopes underline why the project matters for every Togolese citizen.
