COAS Oluyede Pledges Improved Welfare: ‘I Am Very Particular About My Soldiers and Their Families’

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede has reassured of a better welfare for the Nigerian soldiers.

Lt. Gen. Oluyede made the promise on Wednesday, while addressing troops at the headquarters, 6 Division Nigerian Army Barracks, Port Harcourt.

THISDAY observed that the Chief of Army Staff commissioned some ongoing and completed projects within the Division area of responsibility.

Some of the projects inaugurated includes; Python Harmony House, 6 Division Guard Room, Headquarters 6 Division new building (extension), newly constructed corporal quarters, renovated 10 by family corporal quarters and remodeled 29 Battalion quarter guard.

Other projects commissioned are construction of 20 units or two bedroom flat of Senior Non Commissioned Officers quarters, Elele Cantonment, renovated 5 Battalion quarter quarter guard Elele Barracks, commissioning of projects in 16 Brigade barracks, others.

Addressing the troops in their formation, the COAS who was accompanied by the General Officer Commanding 6 Division, Major General Emmanuel Emekah and other Army Chiefs, promised to address the challenges faced by the soldiers.

Oluyede, noting the significant impact of the soldiers in the national security, said “I am very particular about the well-being of my soldiers and their families. 

I have gone round the Division, I know very well the challenges and I am going to address the challenges within the ambit of the resources available to me as the leader army.

I have promised my soldiers that I will do my very best with support of the Federal Government to make life better for them. This is why I came and I think my purpose has been achieved”.

Oluyede further explained “I am in 6 Division area of responsibility, primarily to assess the professional readiness of the division, as well as to examine the level of the soldiers welfare particularly”.

Earlier in Bayelsa, the COAS inaugurated a 300kV transformer and ancillary electrification facilities, donated to the Nigerian Army 16 Brigade in Yenogoa, by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

During the event, Lt. Gen. Oluyede, eulogised the NDDC for consistently supporting the Nigerian army.

He noted: “As you can see, the Niger Delta Development Commission executed most of the projects being commissioned. I want to applaud the NDDC for what it has been doing for the Nigerian Army and the region.”

The NDDC Managing Director, Dr Samuel Ogbuku, who was represented by the Executive Director, Projects, Dr Victor Antai, said following a request to assist in strengthening security infrastructure in the region, the NDDC decided to carry out the project given its significance.

The NDDC’s Boss stated that other interventions made to the 16 Brigade included the installation and stringing of 156 High Tension Prestressed concrete poles, the installation and stringing of 90 Low Tension Prestressed concrete poles, with poles mounted, and the completion of 500 Watts street lights.
