A Magistrates’ Court sitting in Abeokuta, Ogun State, has ordered the remand of a 37-year-old nurse, Kehinde Adesanya, over alleged conspiracy, attempted abortion and murder.
Adesanya is facing a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy, attempt to procure abortion and murder.
The police prosecutor, Solomon Babalola, filed an ex parte motion seeking the remand of the defendant pending legal advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Babalola urged the court to remand Adesanya for an initial period of 60 days at the Ibara Correctional Centre.
He told the court that the alleged offences were committed between January and March in the Ikereku area of Laderin, Abeokuta.
According to the prosecutor, the defendant conspired with others still at large to procure an abortion for one Victoria Ariyo, a 23-year-old corps member serving in Abeokuta.
Ariyo was reported to have died from suspected complications arising from the procedure and was buried last week.
The prosecutor added that the offences contravene Sections 516, 230, 324 and 319 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, 2006.
He further informed the court that one Abass Olalekan, an official of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), alleged to have impregnated the deceased, had earlier been arraigned and granted bail.
In her ruling, the Magistrate, Mrs O.O. Sam-Obaleye, granted the prosecution’s application and ordered that the defendant be remanded at the Ibara Correctional Centre pending legal advice from the DPP.
The case was adjourned until May 26 for mention.
