Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé Appointed President of the Council in Togo

Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé has been appointed as the President of the Council in Togo, a new position established under the constitution adopted in May 2024. The official announcement was made on the morning of Saturday, May 3, during a plenary session at the National Assembly.

As head of government, the President of the Council will be responsible for determining and implementing national policy, chairing cabinet meetings, and directing the administration, defense, and security forces. The President of the Council will also define foreign policy, appoint civilian and military personnel, execute laws, exercise regulatory powers, and has the right to grant pardons.

According to Article 47 of the new Constitution, the position is assigned to the leader of the majority party. The Union for the Republic (UNIR), which holds a significant parliamentary majority, nominated Gnassingbé, and the Constitutional Court validated the nomination.

This appointment marks the beginning of a new political and institutional era for Togo, establishing a parliamentary regime under the Fifth Republic.

A swearing-in ceremony is expected to take place soon to formalize the inauguration of the President of the Council, who is now the central figure in the Togolese executive branch.
