Fence Nigeria? Military Chief Calls for Border Walls to Combat Insecurity

The Voice of Nigeria (VON) forum in Abuja served as a platform for key Nigerian leaders to discuss multifaceted strategies for enhancing national security and fostering citizen engagement. Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa took center stage, proposing a two-pronged approach: strengthening local governance to empower communities and seriously considering the implementation of border fences to physically secure the nation. He supported his argument by referencing other countries that have successfully used border fences to maintain peace and security. He emphasized that national unity and a responsible media landscape are crucial elements in combating insecurity and disinformation.

National Security Advisor Mallam Nuhu Ribadu built upon this foundation, emphasizing the importance of shared responsibility between the government and its citizens in maintaining national security. He highlighted the government’s commitment to leveraging data, technology, and intelligence to address security challenges across the country. Ribadu also noted significant progress, including the rescue of over 1,200 kidnapped victims and the dismantling of numerous illegal refineries.

Adding to the discussion, Minister of Information Mohammed Idris used the forum to praise the progress made under President Tinubu’s leadership. He lauded the administration’s achievements in tackling critical issues such as oil subsidies and foreign exchange challenges, as well as its investments in infrastructure and social programs. He urged Nigerians to remain patient, assuring them that the benefits of these policies would soon be fully realized. The forum concluded with a renewed call for collaboration between government, citizens, and the media in building a more secure and prosperous Nigeria.
