The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) is taking proactive steps to support Nigerian businesses by extending its operating hours to include weekends throughout the month of June 2025. In a directive issued to all tax offices nationwide, FIRS Chairman Zacch Adedeji emphasized the agency’s commitment to a customer-centric approach, translating policy into tangible action. This move is specifically designed to assist companies facing the deadline for filing their Companies Income Tax (CIT) returns.
As the peak of the annual CIT filing season approaches, with a significant number of taxpayers whose financial year concludes on December 31st required to submit their returns by June 30th, the FIRS recognizes the potential challenges businesses may encounter. To alleviate these pressures, the FIRS has authorized weekend operations to provide taxpayers with additional time and resources to meet their obligations.
According to a statement released by ‘Dare Adekanmbi, Special Adviser on Media to the FIRS Chairman, this decision aims to “ease the process for taxpayers, enhance service delivery, and maximize tax collection during this critical period.” The directive, jointly endorsed by the three coordinating directors of the FIRS, highlights the agency’s unified commitment to facilitating tax compliance and supporting the business community. By extending operating hours, the FIRS aims to reduce bottlenecks, provide greater access to assistance, and ensure a smoother tax filing experience for all companies.
