Gabon’s interim President Brice Oligui Nguema announced on Monday that he will participate in the presidential election set for April 12.
At 50 years old, Nguema came to power through a military coup, marking the eighth such event in West and Central Africa from 2020 to 2023. This coup ended the long-standing governance of his predecessor, Ali Bongo, and his family in the oil-rich yet impoverished nation.

“After thoughtful reflection and in light of your many requests, I have chosen to run as a candidate in the presidential election on April 12, 2025,” Nguema stated to his supporters amidst heavy rain in Libreville, the capital of Gabon.
