The Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) has announced it would offer scholarship grants to 500 post-graduate students of Ogoni extraction in Rivers State.
The federal government intervention agency disclosed this at the sensitisation workshop for the 2025 Ogoni post-graduate scholarship support grant, held in Port Harcourt, on Wednesday.
In his address at the programme, the project coordinator of HYPREP, Prof Nenibarini Zabbey, said the scholarship grant was designed to support the students’ research work and subsidize their study expenses as part of the agency’s effort to creating alternative means of livelihood for Ogoni citizens.
“This grant is designed to support your research work and defray part of your study expenses, in line with our commitment to creating alternative sources of livelihood as we continue to advance other goals of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP), including environmental restoration, livelihood improvement, provision of potable water, public health and other special interventions such as the Ogoni Power Project and the Centre of Excellence for Environmental Restoration.
“The 2025 postgraduate scholarship programme reinforces that HYPREP is indeed a promise keeper. Year after year, we have demonstrated our commitment to investing in young people, knowing that their education and expertise are crucial for the sustainable development of Ogoni and the nation,” he said.
The HYPREP coordinator disclosed that the agency, in line with its human development and youth employment goals, had trained over 5000 Ogoni youths in various skills while embarking on many other life-enhancement programmes. He charged the students to utilise the grants wisely.
“The training of 5,000 Ogoni youths, the procurement and business strategy workshop, the career enhancement and employability workshop, the training of mangrove vanguards, the proposal writing workshop and the recently concluded creative arts training are all geared towards this goal.
The scholarship programme is one of the many ways we’re working to restore livelihoods, build capacity and ensure that the United Nations Environment Programme’s recommendations are fully implemented. To all prospective beneficiaries, we encourage you to utilize this grant wisely to ensure that it supports your research and enhances the value of your career,” he explained.
Head of HYPREP’s sustainable livelihood programme, Josephine Nzidee said the agency had initiated many training programmes in 2024 and had continued the practice this year 2025, one of which was the recent creative arts training for 100 Ogoni youths, in partnership with the University of Port Harcourt.
She revealed that the trained creative artists had already produced four movies.
In his remarks, Managing Director, PA-ED Multilinks Consulting, Baa Edward disclosed that the application portal for the post- graduate scholarship would be open for two weeks, beginning from Friday, 29 August, 2025.
THISDAY observed that hundreds of post-graduate students from Ogoni attended the seminar.
