IGP Applauds Governor Diri for Honouring Top Cop with State Banquet

Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has lauded Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, for hosting a high-level state banquet in honour of Superintendent of Police Sentome Obi. Obi, who was recently named the Police Officer of the Year 2024 and received the prestigious IGP Integrity Award, was celebrated for his exceptional courage, professionalism, and ethical commitment to law enforcement.

The event, held in Yenagoa, served as a powerful statement of the value of integrity in public service. According to the IGP, such high-level recognition sends a strong message—not only to the police force but also to the wider society—that honour and honesty are still revered virtues.

Egbetokun praised Governor Diri for recognizing excellence and creating a platform to spotlight ethical leadership within the police ranks. He noted that Obi’s recognition goes beyond personal achievement; it reflects the positive transformation gradually emerging within the Nigeria Police Force. The IGP added that such acts of commendation reinforce the morale of officers across the country and encourage a culture of accountability, courage, and uprightness.

The Governor, in his remarks at the banquet, expressed deep pride in the officer’s achievements. He described SP Obi as a role model whose story should inspire a new generation of public servants. He also noted that Obi’s distinction shows the possibilities that exist when one serves with character, consistency, and a clear sense of duty.

The state banquet gathered top officials, law enforcement leaders, community stakeholders, and dignitaries, who came together to honour the exemplary officer. It was a night of celebration, reflection, and reaffirmation of the need for integrity in public service.

Superintendent Sentome Obi’s story resonates at a time when citizens are calling for transparency and ethical behaviour in public institutions. His recognition as Police Officer of the Year was not just for his professional brilliance, but for consistently upholding values of justice, fairness, and responsibility in the discharge of his duties. The IGP noted that his conduct represents the best of what the Force strives to become.

Moving forward, the Inspector-General stated that the Nigeria Police will continue to uplift and reward officers who exemplify the principles of service, courage, and honesty. He emphasized that institutional reforms are not solely about rules and structure but about people who are willing to set examples.

The event in Yenagoa also highlighted the importance of collaboration between state governments and federal law enforcement in building public trust. With this recognition, Bayelsa has raised the bar for how states can celebrate law-abiding officers and promote a security culture built on integrity.

In closing, Egbetokun reiterated his administration’s commitment to a reformed, people-centered police force. He urged other state leaders to emulate Bayelsa’s example by spotlighting officers who stand out for their professionalism and honour.

By celebrating those who serve with integrity, Nigeria takes one more step toward restoring public confidence and rebuilding the reputation of its law enforcement institutions
