Since Tuesday, February 25, 2025, Lomé has been the venue for a regional conference focused on environmental and climate issues in West Africa. Organized by ECOWAS, this gathering unites representatives from member nations, regional and international organizations, as well as experts in environmental matters. Over the course of three days, attendees will conduct a thorough assessment of the environmental challenges facing the region and develop a unified strategy to tackle these issues.
The initiative is spearheaded by the Department of Economic Affairs and Agriculture, in collaboration with the Directorate of Environment and Natural Resources of the ECOWAS Commission. The outcome of this meeting is expected to be a validated summary report that evaluates the climate and environmental conditions in West Africa, identifies key action priorities, and proposes recommendations aimed at enhancing the resilience of communities against climate change.
In light of environmental challenges such as desertification, coastal erosion, and increasing temperatures, ECOWAS is striving to foster more effective regional collaboration. The goal is to coordinate initiatives that fully incorporate climate considerations into the development strategies of member states.

Discussions will also center on the implementation of commitments made under the Paris Agreement, with the objective of translating these into public policies and actionable projects. The debates will focus on several key areas: financing for environmental policies, the adoption of sustainable agricultural and industrial practices, the protection of vulnerable ecosystems, and the enhancement of state capacities for climate management.
The outcomes of this meeting in Lomé are expected to play a crucial role in shaping future environmental policy decisions within ECOWAS.
