Inspector-General of Police Mourns the Passing of Retired AIG Liman Shettima

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of retired Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG), Liman Shettima, who died on Saturday, July 5, 2025, at his residence in Jos, Plateau State.

In a condolence message released by the Force Public Relations Officer, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, friends, and former colleagues of the late officer, describing his death as a great loss to the Nigeria Police Force and the nation at large.

The IGP, speaking on behalf of the leadership, officers, and men of the Nigeria Police Force, described the late AIG Shettima as a consummate professional whose service was marked by excellence, dedication, and discipline.

“The passing of retired AIG Liman Shettima is a moment of deep sadness for the entire Police family. He was a beacon of professionalism and integrity, who served the Force and the country with honour and commitment throughout his career,” the statement read.

IGP Egbetokun noted that AIG Shettima’s contribution to policing in Nigeria remains indelible, as he served in various key capacities and left behind a legacy of operational excellence, mentorship, and public service. His leadership, especially in the areas of crime prevention and community safety, positively impacted both officers under his command and the communities he served.

He further acknowledged AIG Shettima’s commitment to the welfare of his personnel and his active role in upholding the principles of justice and fair policing during his years of active service. According to the IGP, these values are part of the enduring legacy that will continue to influence the Force long after his passing.

“The Nigeria Police Force has lost one of its finest. AIG Shettima was not only a senior officer but a father figure and mentor to many in the Force. His wisdom, calm demeanor, and unwavering dedication to duty were traits that defined his life of service,” the IGP stated.

He urged the family of the deceased to find strength in the life of purpose and honour that AIG Shettima lived, and assured them of the Force’s support during their time of grief.

“We pray that the Almighty comforts the family and grants them the fortitude to bear this great loss. May the soul of our departed colleague rest in eternal peace,” the statement concluded.

The late AIG Shettima retired after a distinguished career spanning several decades, during which he held various command positions and contributed meaningfully to the safety and security of the nation. Since his retirement, he remained a respected voice in security and community affairs.

As the Nigeria Police Force mourns one of its own, tributes continue to pour in from across the country, with colleagues, security stakeholders, and citizens remembering AIG Shettima as a disciplined, selfless, and dependable officer whose life was dedicated to service and nation-building.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family in due course.
