The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared Thursday, June 12, 2025, as a public holiday to mark the annual Democracy Day celebrations. This year’s commemoration holds particular significance as it marks 26 years of uninterrupted democratic governance in the nation.
The highlight of the Democracy Day events will be an address by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to a joint session of the Senate and the House of Representatives. The session is scheduled to take place at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja.
The choice of June 12 as Democracy Day is deeply rooted in Nigeria’s political history. It commemorates the annulled 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as one of the freest and fairest in the country’s history. The election was won by Chief MKO Abiola, and the June 12 date has become a symbol of democratic aspirations and the struggle for political freedom in Nigeria.
In a statement released by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Federal Government extended its congratulations to all Nigerian citizens on the occasion of the 26th anniversary of uninterrupted democratic rule. The Minister emphasized the importance of June 12 as a representation of Nigeria’s journey towards building a nation founded on truth, justice, and sustained peace.

Further details regarding the National Assembly session were provided by Akin Rotimi, the spokesperson for the House of Representatives. He announced that the joint session would commence at 11:00 am, with President Tinubu expected to arrive and deliver his address at noon.
The theme for this year’s Democracy Day celebration is “26 years of democracy: Renewing our commitment to national development.” This theme underscores the importance of reflecting on the progress made over the past 26 years and reaffirming the nation’s dedication to continued growth and development under democratic principles.
In addition to the President’s address, the joint session will feature goodwill messages from former presiding officers of the National Assembly. A significant part of the event will be the conferment of national honors upon selected legislators by the President, recognizing their contributions to the democratic process.
The House of Representatives has called upon all Nigerians to embrace the spirit of Democracy Day as an opportunity for reflection, a renewed sense of patriotism, and a strengthened commitment to building a more inclusive, prosperous, and united Nigeria. The government hopes that this year’s celebration will serve as a reminder of the importance of democratic values and the need for continued efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
