Rice cultivated in Kovié, Togo, locally referred to as Kovié molou, has recently been granted Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status. This marks the first time a Togolese product has received such a prestigious designation, which associates the quality of a product with its geographical origin.
The official recognition was celebrated at a ceremony held at the end of last week. During this event, the Association for the Promotion and Protection of the Geographical Indication of Kovié Rice (APIG-Kovié Rice), the driving force behind this initiative, was presented with the certification.
This distinction, awarded by the African Intellectual Property Organization (OAPI), provides Kovié rice with legal safeguards against imitation, while also honoring the traditional expertise of local farmers and the unique agro-ecological characteristics of the region. Additionally, it ensures that consumers can enjoy a product with guaranteed traceability and authenticity.
We are showcasing a product that has been relatively unknown both domestically and internationally. This marks a new chapter for us, as it adds significant value to our rice and is expected to enhance our revenue, stated Joseph Kokou Adokanou, president of APIG-Riz de Kovié.
In the long run, this certification could play a vital role in strengthening the agricultural value chains in Togo and improving rural incomes in a region still facing challenges related to insecurity, as noted.
The award of this geographical indication coincides with the Togolese government’s increased efforts to revitalize the agricultural sector, especially in rice production. Additionally, since October 2024, the Togolese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI-Togo) has been dedicated to promoting Togolese rice through the Togolese Rice Development Support Project (PAVRIT).
