Mahmood Adegbite, Permanent Secretary in the Office of Drainage Services and Water Resources in Lagos, has cautioned residents of Lekki against drilling boreholes, warning that the water in the area is likely contaminated with faecal matter.
Speaking during a stakeholders meeting, Adegbite raised health concerns over the quality of water drawn from boreholes in the peninsula, stressing the need for urgent intervention.
“On wastewater treatment, I will say that everyone digging a borehole within the Lekki axis is probably drinking what I will call shit water,” he stated.
He explained that proper treatment of wastewater is critical to preventing the spread of waterborne diseases in the area.
“However, if we are able to treat all the wastewater within this axis which we have plans for, we should be able to also eradicate any form of disease that might result from non-treatment of our waste,” he said.
Addressing the persistent flooding challenges in Lagos, Adegbite acknowledged the government’s investments in infrastructure but admitted that existing efforts are not yet sufficient.
“Despite the fact that we have committed so much, we still need to do a lot in that space,” he noted.
His remarks come amid growing complaints from Lagos residents over worsening floods caused by recent torrential rains. The state government has since warned that more rainfall and flash floods are expected across the city in the coming days.
