The Africa Coast to Europe (ACE) cable plays a crucial role in linking Liberia to global internet services.
Issues arose when construction activities at PHP Park resulted in a pile of rocks being placed on the cable.
This incident occurred some time ago during George Weah’s presidency, but its repercussions are only now becoming apparent.
The cable became buried beneath the rocks, leading to slow and unreliable internet access throughout the nation.
Henry Benson, the head of the Cable Consortium of Liberia, indicated that they had previously alerted authorities about this potential hazard. He noted that the damage could have led to a complete internet outage if not addressed.
Now, under the administration of President Joseph Boakai, the government is taking swift action to resolve the issue.

A repair vessel is en route and is anticipated to arrive by April 23 to assist in fixing the cable and restoring reliable service. However, until then, internet connectivity may continue to be unstable.
To prevent the country from losing internet access entirely, the Liberia Telecommunications Authority is permitting service providers to utilize alternative backup connections to maintain connectivity during the repair process.
Despite the emergence of new options like Starlink, the majority of Liberians still rely on the ACE cable for their internet needs.
