Lomé Airport Saw 1.5 Million Passengers in 2024, a 6% Rise.

In 2024, Gnassingbé Eyadema International Airport (AIGE) recorded a total of 1,506,946 passengers, as reported by the Ministry of Economy and Finance in its budget execution report. This marks a 6.2% increase from the previous year, when the airport served around 1.4 million travelers. Consequently, the country achieved its 2025 goal of 1.5 million passengers a year ahead of schedule.

This growth is primarily attributed to the expansion of the air services offered by various airlines, particularly Asky Airlines, based in the Togolese capital. Since July 2024, Asky has increased its flight frequency between Lomé and Abidjan (Ivory Coast) and resumed its route to Pointe-Noire (Congo) last October.

Additionally, six new routes were launched in 2023, including two by Ethiopian Airlines and four by Asky Airlines. The direct route from Lomé to Washington, initiated by Ethiopian Airlines in June 2022, continues to significantly contribute to this growth. The momentum is further supported by Liz Aviation, established by Burkinabe entrepreneur Mahamadou Bonkoungou, which initially focused on domestic routes like Lomé to Niamtougou and has since expanded to connect Lomé with Ouagadougou.

Togolese officials aim to leverage this growth by planning to enhance the airport’s infrastructure. Their goal is to increase AIGE’s capacity to accommodate 2 million passengers annually in the coming years.

The expansion project includes enlarging waiting areas to add 500 more spaces, thereby improving passenger flow during departures, arrivals, and transits. The terminal will be extended to the south to bolster security and safety measures in line with international standards. Furthermore, the development will feature a hotel for transit passengers, an essential addition to enhance Lomé’s appeal as a travel hub.
